Boot scuffing Appalachicana. Hooting, hollering, and general tomfoolery!

As those who have seen him live can attest, Pierce Edens absorbed the songwriting, storytelling and musical styling of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, where he spent his childhood. This history takes the form of old time, folk and bluegrass music as well as spoken words of storytellers from his North Carolina home; this has earned him the moniker of “Appalachicana.”

Over the last ten years, Edens has been drawing on those roots and blending them with the grungy rock and roll sounds that took him in his teenage years. The result is a haunting and fiery mixture that is notoriously hard to pin down. Allmusic.com classifies Edens as both “Folk-Rock” and “psychedelic-grunge,” and No Depression writer Bill Kopp says “[He] could just as easily- and accurately- be tagged with the singer/songwriter label; He’s a gritty troubadour who takes what he needs from each style, blending and bending it to suit the needs of his songs.”

Through relentless touring, independently producing 4 albums (with one on the way), one full length concert film, and sharing the stage with musical heroes such as: Jim Lauderdale, Todd Snider, Will Kimbrough, and Sturgill Simpson, Edens has garnered a dedicated following of fans across the nation. And as Fred Mills of Blurt magazine says… “Edens is the R.F.D. (Real effin’ Deal), and when he and his band have their collective back against the wall, there’s trouble in store.”

Cousin Curtiss produces rootstomp music at its finest. Lyrics with meaning. Vocality with power. Guitar with fury. Stomp with soul. And the guy plays harmonica like his hair’s on fire. Cousin Curtiss’s finger-picking style is reminiscent of John Butler, his harp playing is on par with John Popper, and his loop jams are straight out of Keller Williams handbook. His one-man-band, ceaselessly-energized performance is designed to move people. Ever practiced. Never the same. Always entertaining.

BT&J–30 years of Sonic Adventures. Dewgrass for Bluegrass!
Some things have changed over the years. Folks have come and gone, it’s PBR in the cooler now, we’ve shrunk in numbers and become wooden rather than electric but we miss the big rhythm sections and the electric power and… maybe someday again? But Dewgrass keeps keeping on and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
It is a pleasure to gather and a grace to play. Walking down an old familiar path or discovering a new one, it is the music, it is the muse, it is such good stuff for the soul. And then there’s the times we come to your town and do it with you – talk about all that and more!

Deliciously Stanky. Dynamically Funky. Recklessly Hopeful. Grounded in soul, the Charles Walker Band has been compared to Prince, Bruno Mars, The Brand New Heavys, and James Brown. The Milwaukee based band has refined their sound into Neo-Funk, a fusion of funk infused rhythms with pop melodies. The three-piece band rehearses tirelessly in Charles’ basement, amidst couches and low ceilings, Charles having to stoop the entire time. Surprisingly, at the band’s shows, there are no fans. There is only family. The question posed at the beginning of the first song is, Are we family or not? The band evokes positive energy to their family members, who say they always feel better than when they arrived. The Charles Walker Band is Deliciously Stanky. Dynamically Funky. Recklessly Hopeful.
Charles grew up literally in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by dairy farms and apple orchards, the closest town ten miles away, he found music in six grade. After being presented with various instruments, he desperately wanted to play trombone. However, his music teacher declared he had the perfect mouth for saxophone, and his career was started. Walker, now also keyboardist and vocalist in the band, started the Charles Walker Band 15 years ago, initially as a blues band. When Porsche Carmon joined, a Columbus, OH native and female vocalist, bassist, and hand percussionist in the band, the sound begin to shift towards funk. Eventually, Charles and Porsche became a couple, and together laugh, cry, and argue about how best to plan shows that compete with cell phones and tablets. As a testament to their ability to create an engaging show, one of the band’s family said at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, “I had to go to the bathroom for two hours but held it because I didn’t want to miss a minute!”
The core of the Charles Walker Band is a three piece band. Besides Charles and Porsche, Paris Howard nails down the drums.

As a duo, M.a.R. has thirty years of combined performing experience. Recent graduates of UW-Green Bay, M.a.R. uses the skills learned under the UWGB music faculty as well as bringing a flair of their own to their performances.

On an individual basis, Matt Hillman, the guitarist, collaborates regularly with Appleton’s Big Band Reunion, The Peguero Sisters, Funk Trunk, Unified Soul, The Noble Brothers, and many others. Rissel Peguero, the vocalist and pianist, collaborates mostly with The Peguero Sisters but has sung in many events, including UWGB’s Jazz Fest.

M.a.R.’s style is rooted in the steps of famous jazz artists, including (but not limited to) Joe Pass, Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Hall, Cyrille Aimee, Stevie Wonder, Mel Torme, Bill Evans, etc. Putting an even more personal aspect to their music, M.a.R. incorporates Spanish and Portuguese lyrics into their sets to add an ethnic touch.

The Blues Disciples have been bringing their Blues to the people of the local clubs in the Milwaukee area and the Midwest region since 1990. Founded by “Barefoot” Jimmy Schwarz with the intent of remaining true to the influences of the Chicago electric blues era of the ’50’s and 60’s. Influenced initially by the likes of Little Walter, and Muddy Waters, and then directly by Wisconsin Blues greats Jim Liban and Billy Flynn they forged a sound and band that rose to the top of the Milwaukee Blues scene. Their years of powerful shows every week at Milwaukee Blues fixture, The Up & Under, turned a whole new generation on to the Blues genre. Many years and changes have kept their music fresh, and relevant, while still remaining true to their Blues roots.
