Ezra Bell’s first full-length debut features ebullient soul twang, flowing and leaping like the music of a late 60s/early 70s recording of well-trained freaks dabbling in various genres. This Portland band sounds like they effortlessly recorded one of those forgotten-gem “cult albums”, despite it being early 2018.
After three well-received EPs and playing regularly in Portland since 2013, the playfully literate and cheerfully plaintive Benjamin Wuamett and his gaggle of quite fit players, conjure up a festive dusky folk-rock-blues-jazz-R&B-pop vibe that doesn’t smother out the melancholy. These haunted stories include key tracks “Tourists” (“This one is about realizing the game is rigged, but you still have to play; it’s the only game in town”); “Yawning at the Seance (“This one is about the stories we tell ourselves in order to feel like everything is okay”), and “Let Me Do the Talking.” About that last one: “The opening line is a rip-off of something the boxer Jack Johnson said when asked how he managed to so intrigue women. He said ‘eat jellied eels and think distant thoughts.’ I think it’s one of the great travesties (and a telling indictment of our society) of our time that a great man’s name has been usurped by some surfer singing about breakfast.” The glistening, giddy music on these tracks help to document the car-wreck gas-lit lifestyles Wuamett masterfully describes. He displays gleaming shards of a self-depreciative self-awareness but also someone busy getting lost. “The overall theme going into this?” Wuamett answers to what the album is about. “Desperation. A call to arms. A whimper. A declaration that being witty by yourself at 4 AM in a basement, is a poor way to live.” Ezra Bell features Maurice Spencer (bass), Tom Trotter (drums), Aaron Mattison (horns and arrangements), Honora Hildreth (backing vocals and percussion), and Jeremy Asay (keys and guitar) more-than-ably backing up Wuamett’s story-songs and satirical jigs with organic precision.

Press Highlights:
“By listening you can tell this self-titled album is something you need to run and see live. It shivers and shakes. A reason it may be difficult to pin down a description is that the music is more like an action then something you should just sit idly by and describe. This album is running up hills of grass at age 9. It’s the feeling of jumping in the pool without testing it with your toes. It’s those late night drunken stool-swaying sessions with a group of irreplaceable people in your life.”
-Paste Magazine

“Ezra Bell is a West Coast poet of disappearing into appetites. The virtues and vices described on this self-titled release are backed by a tantalizing singalong, early 20th century jazz ensemble vibe, sounding like the musical journaling of a swing musician crawling out of rehab. Wuamett’s lyrics describe a soul dissolved, but the feeling isn’t completely unpleasant.”
-No Depression
“Benjamin Wuamett’s (vocals, guitar) ability to tell stories through song is intimate, riveting and inviting. There’s a sweetness in the somber lyrics that makes you want to dance and sing along with joy—and the crowd did just that!”

Add extra fun to your Sunday Funday as Andrea von Kampen & Auralai will be performing live at Gibson Music Hall on July 28th, at 3:00 PM. Doors at 2pm with mimosas and bloody marys a-plenty!

Andrea von Kampen is an independent folk singer-songwriter based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose effortless vocal delivery has been praised by Hear Nebraska as “soulful and worn-in.” With the successful release of two EP’s, Another Day (2015) and Desdemona (2016), a Christmas EP (2016), an Audiotree Live album (2017), and her debut full-length album Old Country (2019), Andrea has quickly established herself in the recording studio and on the road. She has shared the stage with artists such as Tall Heights, Ira Wolf, Dead Man Winter, The Brother Brothers, Dead Horses, Darling West and many more.

Old Country, Andrea von Kampen’s debut full-length album, was released on February 8th, 2019. The album was recorded and mastered in Nebraska and features exclusively Nebraska-based musicians. Inspiration for Andrea’s songs often come from literature, art, and nature; in particular the literature and nature of Nebraska and the Midwest. The title track, Old Country, is based on the book “My Ántonia” by Nebraska author Willa Cather.

Her single, Portland, received notable attention including features on The Bluegrass Situation, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Additionally, Amazon Music Canada featured Portland in their ‘Top Songs of 2018’ playlist. In a review of Portland, Ear To The Ground Music said, “It’s not so much about where you’re going, but that you want to get away. That emotion of “idealistic escapism” is one that listeners can all connect with, whether or not we want to go to Oregon or somewhere else. The inflection in von Kampen’s vocal has the conviction of a gospel track and the sincerity of a Dylan folk ballad.”

Motherfolk is coming back to Appleton for a summer show! Don’t miss it.

BIOGRAPHY
After the release of their first two EPs, Ephrem Pts. 1 & 2, Nick Anderson & The Skinny Lovers (NASL) partnered with Tinderbox Music in Minneapolis, MN. Their first radio promo landed them a number 1 chart position in Florida, and a number 8 position in North Carolina.

With the newly found radio audience, these songs and their deep emotional context made them a perfect fit for TV Networks like MTV, E!TV, NETFLIX. These networks, along with 10+ more, licensed NASL’s debut EPs.
These licenses opened many doors and ears of industry professionals. Phil Ehart of KANSAS even called NASL’s song 24 ‘The Anthem of a Generation.’ and the band secured an opening spot with former BoDeans frontman Sam Llanas. In 2018 NASL hit the road to play Red Gorilla Music Festival in Austin, TX during SXSW. They sold out prominent live music venue Handlebar. Later that year, they played Summerfest’s Emerging Artist Series which boasts alumni such as WALK THE MOON, Maren Morris, and X Ambassadors.
Nick Anderson & The Skinny Lovers released their debut full length album Ephrem (Pts. 1-3) to a sold out hometown crowd in 2019. As the shows get bigger, and the fans get more attached, this band shows no signs of slowing down.

SIRSY is a ROCK & SOUL DUO with lots of pop sensibility & just the right amount of sass! Fronted by charistmatic lead singer, Melanie who is also the band’s drummer and plays a full kit standing up. Melanie plays bass parts on a keyboard with her drum stick and even throws in some mean flute solos. Rich Libutti plays a road worn and well loved Rickenbacker through a pedal board full of vintage effects. He also pays bass with his feet and tells super nerdy Star Wars jokes. SIRSY is known for passionate performances that often include lots of stories from the road, laughs, and dance parties. It’s a good time! 🙂 SIRSY plays 250+ shows per year nationally & has played with Grace Potter, Maroon 5, Cheap Trick, Train, and many more. Their music is featured on Showtime’s hit TV show “Shameless”

Old Soul Society brings their Americana Folk Rock show to Gibson Music Hall in Appleton, Wisconsin on Thursday June 13, 2019 from 7:00 – 10:00pm

Bio:
Old Soul Society is a Wisconsin-based act, rooted in Americana with branches into Folk, Rock, Soul, Pop, Country, Blues & more.

Fronted by Singer/ Songwriter Derek Ramnarace on Vocals & Guitars and featuring a cast of top notch musicians, Old Soul Society’s focus is clearly on the craft of songwriting as displayed in the rich, textured musical layers they create to underscore Ramnarace’s introspective, honest and heartfelt lyrics.

These details combine into a powerfully stirring live performance that has been winning over audiences everywhere. They have appeared on the same bill with such acts as Phil Lesh, Kaleo, The Dead Horses, Samantha Fish, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts, Chicago Farmer, Them Coulee Boys and were contracted by Live Nation to appear in the VIP Lounge for Zac Brown Band

The star is already burning bright for Old Soul Society and only appears to be getting brighter following the releases of their debut album “The Farmhouse Sessions” in 2016 and their authorized bootleg “A Live One” in late 2018.

Copper Box, one of WI’s favorites, that brings melodic folk rock originals and covers featuring the multi instrumentalists, Danny & Michelle Jerabek. Copper Box is a genre-bending celebration of fusion roots rock that channels the rowdy communal feel of a small-town party with their refreshing, gutsy, americana sound of artists like the legendary Esteban Jordan (the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion), Doug Sahm, Clifton Chenier, Los Lobos, and CCR…a must see!
